Comfort, eye health and vision

Eye care for dogs and cats

Veterinary ophthalmology is the care of animal eyes. Similar symptoms can have different causes, so an examination is the starting point. We assess your pet’s symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment and further investigations.

01 / THIRD EYELID

Cherry eye surgery

A pink or red swelling at the inner corner of the eye may be a prolapsed third eyelid gland, commonly called cherry eye. We offer assessment and surgical treatment, including cases affecting both eyes.

02 / EYE SURFACE

Corneal ulcers and injuries

A scratch or ulcer on the clear surface of the eye can be painful. Squinting, watering and rubbing need prompt assessment. We discuss treatment and arrange further surgical care or referral when needed.

03 / TEARS

Dry eye and discharge

Reduced tear production can cause irritation and persistent discharge. Examination and tear testing may help identify the problem. Some conditions need ongoing medication and regular reviews.

04 / EYELIDS

Eyelid and eyelash problems

Inward-rolling eyelids, known as entropion, or misplaced eyelashes can rub against the eye. We assess eyelid position and discuss whether medical treatment, corrective surgery or referral is appropriate.

05 / RED OR WATERY EYES

Redness and inflammation

Redness and discharge are not always a simple infection. An examination helps distinguish conjunctivitis from problems such as ulcers or other painful conditions that need a different approach.

06 / VISION CHANGES

Cloudy eyes and reduced vision

Contact us about new cloudiness, bumping into objects or changes in your pet’s vision. We can assess the concern and discuss further investigations or specialist referral, including for suspected cataracts or glaucoma.

A focus on preserving the tear gland

Cherry eye surgery in Kent

Treatment for a prolapsed third eyelid gland in one or both eyes.

Dogs and cats have a third eyelid with a gland that helps produce tears. When the gland slips out of position, it can appear as a pink or red lump near the inner corner of the eye.

The aim of cherry eye surgery is usually to reposition and preserve the gland. Keeping this tear-producing tissue matters for long-term eye health.

What happens next?

We examine the eye and discuss the recommended approach, anaesthetic arrangements, estimate and aftercare. If both eyes are affected, we can discuss bilateral cherry eye surgery.

Recovery may involve prescribed eye medication, a protective collar and review appointments. The gland can prolapse again after surgery, and further treatment may be needed.

An informed treatment plan

What to expect at an eye appointment

01 / LISTEN

Tell us what you have noticed

Let us know when the symptoms started, whether one or both eyes are affected and which treatments your pet has already received. Bring previous reports and the names of any eye drops.

02 / EXAMINE

Understand the cause

Your vet examines the eyes and eyelids. Depending on the findings, tests may include measuring tear production, using a dye to check the cornea or measuring eye pressure.

03 / PLAN

Discuss treatment and review

We explain the next steps, whether these involve medication, surgery, monitoring or specialist referral. Ask us about the estimate and how to give any prescribed treatment at home.

An eye held closed, marked pain, an injury, sudden cloudiness or sudden loss of vision needs prompt veterinary advice. Call us rather than wait for a routine appointment.

Yes. Contact Noah’s Ark to arrange an assessment for cherry eye surgery, including cases where both eyes are affected. We discuss suitability, costs and aftercare following examination.

Repositioning and preserving the gland is generally preferred because it contributes to tear production. Your vet will explain the appropriate approach for your pet.

The cost depends on the diagnosis, investigations and procedure. Contact us for an assessment and an estimate, including what medication and follow-up care are included.

Use only medication your vet has advised for the current problem. Do not restart leftover drops without checking: a treatment suitable for one condition may be unsuitable for another.

We can assess pets with suspected cataracts or glaucoma and discuss appropriate next steps. Advanced investigations or surgery may require specialist referral. Suspected glaucoma needs urgent advice.
