Purposeful exercise in water

What is canine hydrotherapy?

A form of rehabilitation using controlled exercise in water.

Water provides buoyancy and resistance. This can reduce the load on joints while making muscles work during movement. With an underwater treadmill, a dog walks on a moving belt within a water-filled chamber.

A plan for the individual dog

Hydrotherapy should be matched to your dog’s condition, confidence and stage of recovery. It may complement medication, home exercises or surgical care as part of a wider veterinary plan.

The aim is purposeful, manageable exercise. Progress and suitability vary between dogs, and hydrotherapy is not a cure for arthritis or a replacement for veterinary assessment.

Supporting mobility

Could hydrotherapy help your dog?

Ask your vet whether a hydrotherapy assessment would be appropriate. The following are common reasons owners discuss rehabilitation; the recommended approach depends on the diagnosis and your dog’s health.

01 / SURGICAL RECOVERY

Recovery after orthopaedic surgery

Hydrotherapy may form part of rehabilitation after procedures such as TPLO or fracture repair. The treating vet must advise when it is appropriate to begin.

02 / JOINT COMFORT

Arthritis and joint stiffness

Controlled activity may help maintain strength and mobility in dogs with arthritis. A rehabilitation plan should work alongside appropriate pain management and weight advice.

03 / JOINT CONDITIONS

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Dogs with joint conditions may benefit from a discussion about suitable exercise. Assessment helps identify realistic goals and an appropriate level of activity.

04 / OLDER DOGS

Senior dog mobility

If your older dog is slowing down or struggling to rise, start with a veterinary check. We can discuss whether hydrotherapy fits their needs and comfort.

05 / CONDITIONING

Strength and weight support

Suitable controlled exercise may support conditioning and a wider weight management plan. It should complement nutrition advice and a realistic activity programme.

06 / COORDINATION

Selected neurological conditions

Some dogs with neurological problems may be considered for rehabilitation. Veterinary assessment is essential to establish whether water-based exercise is suitable.

Our new facility

Underwater treadmill hydrotherapy in Maidstone

Noah’s Ark’s hydrotherapy service is centred on a Tudor Neptune underwater treadmill. This provides a setting for controlled walking in water, rather than a free-swimming session.

Located on the same site as our veterinary clinic, the facility brings a new rehabilitation option to owners in Maidstone and across Kent.

Discuss your dog’s needs before starting

Tell us about any diagnosis, recent surgery, current medication and advice from your treating vet. We can explain the assessment process and the information needed before a session.

If your dog is registered elsewhere, contact us to discuss sharing their clinical history and veterinary authorisation.

A clear starting point

Planning your dog’s first visit

01 / ENQUIRE

Speak to the team

Contact us with your dog’s age, condition and rehabilitation goals. Ask about availability after the planned 20 October launch and the cost of assessment and sessions.

02 / ASSESS

Check suitability

Your dog’s clinical history, mobility and comfort guide the decision to proceed. Recent surgery, wounds, infections or other health concerns can affect when treatment is appropriate.

03 / REVIEW

Follow an individual plan

The exercise programme and review schedule should reflect your dog’s response. Ask what to do at home and when changes in comfort or movement should be reported.

Dog hydrotherapy: frequently asked questions

Our planned launch date is 20 October 2026. Contact the team now to enquire about assessments and appointment availability.

An underwater treadmill involves walking in water rather than free swimming. Tell us if your dog is nervous around water so we can discuss suitability and familiarisation.

It may be included in a rehabilitation plan after TPLO, but the timing must follow the treating vet’s advice. Do not start water-based exercise before receiving clearance.

It may be an option for some dogs as part of a wider mobility and pain management plan. Assessment is needed to decide what exercise is appropriate.

Contact our team for current assessment and session prices. We can also explain what is included and whether a course of treatment is recommended.

This depends on the condition, goals and progress. The plan should be reviewed as your dog responds, rather than assuming every dog needs the same number of sessions.

Yes, contact us to discuss an assessment. We can explain how to provide clinical records and obtain any veterinary authorisation needed before treatment.
